The UK is home to people from all over the world, making it easy to discover different cultures, languages and food. As well as enjoying traditional British culture, you can use this time to experience the international atmosphere of Leicester. Visit the Golden Mile on Belgrave Road to enjoy delicious Indian food, or try a new cuisine at Leicester Market. The city is also home to the largest celebration of Diwali outside of India.
The centre of the city
Life in Britain can vary from small towns to bustling cities. Most British universities are situated in cities. As a student of the International Study Centre, you are right in the heart of Leicester. St Georges Tower is located in the city center, close to the train station and many other amenities. You will be surrounded by restaurants, shops, and parks, so there is always something to do. Within twenty minutes, you can walk to the University of Leicester. This campus has everything you could need – including restaurants, shops, and a bank. You are also close to the peaceful Victoria Park, connecting the city center to the University.

The University of Leicester’s Career Development Service is recognised for how well it prepares its students for the world of work - with 95% of students in employment or further study six months after graduation (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey 2017).

The UK healthcare system is known as the National Health Service (NHS). When you arrive, we will help you register with a doctor (also known as a General Practitioner or GP) at your local surgery.

The UK has an effective transportation system, making it easy to travel around. Living in the UK also offers a great opportunity to explore the rest of Europe. As a big city, Leicester has many transportation options. It is easy to travel around the UK, as well as abroad.

Rail travel
The UK has a nationwide rail network that connects towns, cities, and rural areas. It is usually faster to travel by train than by road. For the lowest prices, book advance tickets online, and always look out for student discounts. Leicester is very well connected to other cities by rail – London St Pancras International is just over an hour away. From here, you can even take the train to France on the Eurostar.

The UK has a wide choice of international airports. Leicester is located in the centre of England, so is within easy reach of several major airports:
- East Midlands Airport (EMA) and Birmingham Airport (BHX) are less than an hour away by car
- London Stansted Airport (STN) is two hours away by car
- Manchester Airport (MAN) is two and a half hours away by car
- East Midlands Airport (EMA) and Birmingham Airport (BHX) are less than an hour away by car
